House in Seal Harbor

Senior Architect with Peter Forbes, FAIA Architects

This 7,400 square foot home is situated on an elevated ledge ¼ mile from the Atlantic Ocean. The design follows a north-south break in the ledge, terminating at a granite projection that looks along a small gorge to the ocean. In following this ledge, the house assumes a thin, linear scheme. Because the house follows the height of the natural tree canopy, the sunlight remains essentially unaltered to the vegetation and the forest floor. In addition, The house bridges most of the ground plane allowing the subsurface water to follow its historic course. This insures that the flow of melt water will follow its natural course ensuring the minerals necessary for the plants’ survival and protecting the stability of the thin organic layer.
