Jedrey Residence

Senior Architect with Peter Forbes, FAIA Architects

Situated on the south facing coast of Maine, the site is a narrow strip of wetlands overlooking a beach and a distant island. The scheme defers to the landscape, which is an intersection of two flood zones and wetlands, and rests on piers making minimal contact with the ground. Conceived as a tube whose roof slopes slightly upward as it approaches the sea, the house combines both vernacular precedents and modern aesthetics. The end portion of the tube was broken off and rotated 40º, placing it on axis with the distant island. The end was treated as a separate entity puncturing a glass wall at the end of the tube and exposing its sheathing on the interior of the house. It is fully glazed at the end with minimal structural interruption.
